1. WHAT IS DRY MOUTH (XEROSTOMIA)?

Xerostomia is the for the symptom of a sensation of dryness in the mouth. The term comes from the Greek xeros (dry) and stoma (mouth). Normal saliva production when resting is around 0.03-04 ml/min. Xerostomia does not necessarily indicate an objective lack of mucous of the mouth, but rather reduced saliva production. The sensation of dryness in the mouth varies in each individual and not all cases of hyposalivation are accompanied by dry mouth.

2. IS THERE A CURE FOR DRY MOUTH?

Different methods of saliva stimulation, both pharmacological (pilocarpine) and non-pharmacological (mechanical, electrical, laser, acupuncture or hyperbaric oxygen, stem cell injections) and the correct use of saliva substitutes following an exhaustive diagnosis can help maintain increased oral hydration.

3. HOW CAN I PREVENT / AVOID DRY MOUTH?

The basic preventative measures for dry mouth include:

  • adequate hydration: water, non-carbonated drinks and drinks without added sugar;
  • humid environments (avoiding air conditioning and heating); using humidifiers;
  • avoiding bad habits that aggravate the dryness: alcohol, smoking or chewing tobacco, coffee, tea and drinks with cola extracts, etc.; and
  • healthy habits: balanced diets and regular exercise.
