Snoring in children

Snoring in children indicates respiratory obstruction problems, even when it is not accompanied by sleep apnoea (pauses in breathing).

Its main causes originate in the tonsils and/or adenoids

The main cause of snoring in children is the enlargement (hypertrophy) of the tonsils and/or adenoids/ and/or nasal turbinates.

Hypertrophy of the tonsils and/or adenoids can lead to:

  • snoring (as well as other kinds of noises during sleep)
  • abnormal postures
  • breathing with the mouth open
  • fatigue
  • abnormal teeth development
  • sleep apnoea (temporary pause in breathing during sleep)
  • delayed growth (in some cases)
  • changes in academic performance and personality (frequent)
  • night-time incontinence (bed-wetting that continues after the age of 4 (in some cases)

Treatment

The treatment for snoring involves the laser-assisted reduction (of the size) of the tonsils, which avoids the complete and unnecessary removal of the tonsils. The laser procedure is painless and blood-free, which is why is it can even be performed on small children, even babies.

Moreover, with this treatment the function of the tonsils is preserved (the production of antibodies), meaning that is can be performed on very small children, even on babies under the age of 1, unlike the traditional method (complete removal), which due to its associated risks cannot be performed on children under 3.

A small portion of the tonsil tissue is preserved, allowing the tonsils to continue performing their function: the production of antibodies.
